Walking Saint John from the Cruise Port to Reversing Falls
Arriving in Saint John by cruise ship brings you directly to Canada’s oldest incorporated city. Saint John is tied to Loyalist settlers and the shipping industry, and today blends historic streets with a scenic harbourfront.
The city is compact and easy to explore on foot, with colorful murals, heritage landmarks, and a unique tidal phenomenon at Reversing Falls. Markets and green parks make it just as appealing for casual strolling as for sightseeing.
Whether you are interested in history, scenery, or sampling local crafts, Saint John rewards visitors with plenty to see within walking distance of the cruise port.
My day began at the AREA 506 Waterfront Container Village, a creative hub where shipping containers are transformed into shops and food stands. Murals and bright storefronts made this a lively start, and it felt like a welcoming gateway into the city.
I continued along Harbour Passage Trail, the red pathway running beside the St. John River. The walk stretched out to Reversing Falls, where the powerful Bay of Fundy tides create the rare effect of the river reversing its flow. From nearby Wolastoq Park, I found sweeping views back toward the bridges and harbour.
On my return, I passed Place Fort LaTour and continued into the heart of the city. Highlights included Loyalist House, the Gothic-style Stone Church, and Kings Square with its Victorian bandstand. I ended the day at the Saint John City Market, where vendors sold crafts, baked goods, and fresh produce inside a historic building filled with energy.
