Puerto Vallarta Handmade Tortillas and Rocky Beach Views
The air felt warm and slightly smoky as tortillas cooked over an open flame while we gathered around a rustic clay stove. I remember that moment clearly while arriving by cruise into Puerto Vallarta, stepping off the ship knowing the day would take us far beyond the busy port streets.
Puerto Vallarta (Puerto Vallarta – Pronounced [PWER-toh vah-YAHR-tah]) sits along the curve of Banderas Bay on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The city blends a vibrant waterfront with surrounding jungle hills, and cruise visitors often discover that just a short drive inland reveals a completely different rhythm of life.
One of my first excursions here started with an open-air safari truck ride toward San José del Valle. In the town square we watched tortillas being made using machinery before continuing deeper into the countryside. Later our hosts demonstrated the traditional process of grinding corn into masa using a metate and mano. Fresh tortillas were then cooked by hand over the fire and passed around for everyone to taste.
The safari portion of the tour continued through dusty backroads in Bucerías where we stopped for a short hike. Along the trail our guides pointed out native plants and explained how many of them are still used for food or medicine. The excursion ended at a beachside banquet facility in Cruz de Huanacaxtle where we enjoyed lunch and a quiet walk along a rocky stretch of shoreline.
Over the years I have returned to Puerto Vallarta many times and experienced different sides of the city. Some visits have been simple walking days along the Malecon or through Zona Romantica. Others have been social afternoons at the famous Blue Chairs beach area. What stands out most is how easily the city shifts between lively coastal energy and quieter moments in the countryside.
