Exploring the Fjord Village of Olden, Norway

A cruise ship docked in a fjord beside colorful houses and green hills

Sailing into the Olden cruise port feels like entering a storybook. This small village in western Norway sits at the end of the deep Nordfjord, surrounded by steep mountains and green pastures.

Olden has a long history tied to farming, glaciers, and the rhythms of nature. Its location makes it a gateway to some of the region’s most stunning landscapes, including the famous Briksdal Glacier. But even without an excursion, the town itself is a peaceful highlight.

On foot, the beauty of Olden reveals itself slowly. Painted houses, flower gardens, quiet rivers, and mirrored fjord reflections make even a short walk feel magical.

I didn’t book a tour in Olden, and I’m glad I didn’t. With so much beauty surrounding the port, just wandering through the village was more than enough. The walking path hugs the shoreline, offering views of calm water that reflects the mountains like glass. The town was filled with flowers in bloom and fresh greenery all around.

A few shops and homes add charm to the route, and a small church stands quietly among it all. I walked slow laps through the area, listening to waterfalls echo through the valley and spotting wildflowers and even a crow pecking through a field. The colors here stand out, white cottages, red barns, and pink rhododendrons all seem to glow against the mountain backdrop.

Even with a large cruise ship docked nearby, the town felt peaceful. Olden doesn’t need much to impress. It’s one of those rare places where nature handles the storytelling.
