Flower-Lined Fjord Walks in Olden
The air felt cool and fresh, and the quiet sound of water trickling down the mountains carried across the fjord. Sailing into Olden on a cruise ship, the first thing I noticed was how calm everything looked. The water reflected the surrounding peaks like glass, and colorful flowers seemed to grow everywhere along the walking paths.
This small village, known locally as Olden (Olden – Pronounced [OL-den]), sits at the inner end of the Nordfjord in western Norway. It immediately felt peaceful and welcoming, with red and white houses scattered across the valley and mountains rising steeply behind them.
I didn’t book any excursions here. Instead, I spent the day walking slow loops around town, passing small shops, quiet streets, and the village church. Flower beds lined the waterfront paths, and the mountains seemed to sit right beside the road in some places. Every few minutes I would stop for another photo because the scenery kept changing.
What stood out most was how still everything felt. Even with a cruise ship docked nearby, the town stayed quiet. I could hear waterfalls somewhere in the hills and occasionally the distant sound of a cow across the valley. Olden turned out to be the kind of place where simply walking around is the best way to experience it.
Olden has long been connected to farming and fjord life, and today it also serves as a gateway to glaciers deeper in the valley. Excursions often head toward Briksdal Glacier or nearby mountain viewpoints, but the village itself remains small and grounded. That balance between dramatic nature and a quiet rural setting is what makes Olden such a memorable stop.
