Corfu Harbor Views and Kumquat Distillery Stop
Warm Mediterranean air drifted across the harbor as bright sunlight reflected off calm water and pale stone walls. Arriving by cruise in Corfu meant stepping from the ship directly into a day of coastal views and historic landmarks scattered across the island.
Corfu, known in Greek as Κέρκυρα (Kerkyra), sits along the northwest coast of Greece and has long been shaped by Venetian influence and maritime trade. The mix of fortresses waterfront promenades and leafy squares gives the city a relaxed atmosphere even on busy summer days.
My sightseeing excursion began with a stop at Kanoni Harbour where the small white chapel on Mouse Island sits just offshore. From the viewpoint the narrow causeway stretching toward the island and the calm blue water surrounding it created one of the most recognizable scenes on the island.
From there we continued into Corfu Town and the wide lawns of Spianada Square before walking toward the Old Fortress of Corfu. Thick stone ramparts and defensive walls rise above a deep moat and the harbor beyond. Not far away we visited Lazaris Distillery and Artisan Sweets where the island’s famous kumquats are processed into liqueurs preserves and other bright orange treats.
The excursion finished with a scenic stop at Bella Vista Viewpoint high above the coastline. From there the landscape opened up into sweeping views of green hills small islands and turquoise coves. Corfu has been an important crossroads for centuries and its layered history reflects the many cultures that passed through this strategic part of the Mediterranean.
