A Day Beneath the Rain Tree: Exploring Romney Manor on St. Kitts

St. Kitts has a charm that slowly reveals itself as you wander its hillsides and coastal roads. When I visited in spring of 2018 on a cruise, I signed up for an excursion that took me to Romney Manor, home of the famous Caribelle Batik. Nestled in lush greenery, the estate is more than just a peaceful retreat, it’s a window into the island’s rich cultural and colonial history.

The highlight for me was the massive saman tree, also known as a rain tree, that towers over the property. Estimated to be over 400 years old, this tree is believed to be the oldest living organism on the island. Standing beneath its sprawling branches, it’s easy to understand why this tree is so revered. Its canopy is so wide it creates a natural umbrella of shade over the grounds, offering a moment of cool in the tropical warmth.

Romney Manor also features demonstrations of the batik process, where artisans use beeswax and vibrant dyes to create stunning patterns on fabric. Watching the wax being applied and then seeing the cloth take on layers of bold color was mesmerizing. I came away with a new appreciation for the level of detail and patience required to craft each piece.

After soaking in the artistry and gardens, we continued deeper into the estate grounds where some old stone ruins still remain from the island’s days of sugar production. We even spotted a few goats and cows wandering through the ruins, giving the area a quiet, pastoral feeling. The hike through the surrounding forested areas was peaceful, with small creeks and winding trails that made me feel like I’d stepped off the beaten path.

St. Kitts may be small, but it’s packed with natural beauty, history, and a relaxed island vibe. My short time there left me wanting more, and that’s the best kind of travel memory.
