Victoria Harbor Seaplanes and Floating Houses
The air feels cool and slightly salty, with the low hum of seaplanes echoing across the water as I step off the ship. Arriving by cruise into Victoria places you right along the harbor, where the city immediately opens up into waterfront paths and views that feel calm and familiar. Even after multiple visits, the rhythm of the harbor never really changes.
Victoria settles into a steady pace once you leave the ship behind. The walk into town is easy and flat, with the harbor always nearby, and landmarks like the Parliament Buildings and the Fairmont Empress gradually coming into view as you move inland.
On full day visits, I tend to move further out, making time for Abkhazi Garden where the paths wind through carefully designed landscapes and tea service slows everything down. Other visits are more about the waterfront, walking through Fisherman’s Wharf and its colorful floating homes, or pausing along the harbor to watch seaplanes take off and land just a short distance away.
Craigdarroch Castle adds a completely different layer to the experience. Inside, the rooms feel preserved in time, with stained glass, heavy wood details, and carefully arranged interiors that contrast with the open waterfront outside. Later in the day, I often loop back toward the harbor, where the Empress shifts from a daytime landmark into something more striking once it is lit up at night.
Victoria sits at the southern edge of Vancouver Island and carries a strong British colonial influence that still shows in its architecture and public spaces. At the same time, elements like totem poles along the waterfront reflect the deeper Indigenous presence in the region, creating a city that feels layered without being overwhelming.
