Limon Sloths in the Park and Rainforest Gondola Views
Warm humid air wrapped around me the moment I stepped off the ship while sailing into Limon cruise port. The sounds of birds carried from the nearby trees and waves crashed against the rocky shoreline just beyond the pier. Within minutes of arriving by cruise in Limon I was already hearing locals call out friendly greetings as people passed along the street.
The city of Limon (Limón – Pronounced lee-MOHN) sits on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast and immediately felt relaxed and welcoming. Just across from the pier is a small park where locals gather under tall palm trees and where sloths sometimes appear high in the branches above. Bright birds flashed between the leaves while the city moved at a slower pace that seemed to match the rhythm of the ocean nearby.
On my first visit I joined an excursion inland to Veragua Rainforest where the jungle quickly closed in around us with deep greens and dense vegetation. A Sky Gondola carried us quietly above the canopy while waterfalls and thick forest stretched out below. Along the trails I spotted frogs in the exhibits and butterflies drifting through a covered garden. My photos from that day may not be perfect but the memory of standing inside that living rainforest is still clear.
Back near the port I wandered through the park again and watched a sloth curled among the branches overhead. The shoreline here is rocky and the waves crash hard against the coast but it makes a peaceful place to sit and listen to the sea. Just steps from the ship I also found G&E Chocolate Adventure Company where roasted cocoa beans coated in flavors like ginger or chili slowly melt into chocolate as you chew them. It remains one of the most memorable treats I have discovered in any cruise port.
Costa Rica is famous for the phrase “Pura Vida,” which loosely translates to pure life but really describes a way of living. In Limon that spirit feels genuine rather than staged. Friendly greetings from strangers quiet wildlife encounters in the park and simple moments by the sea all combine to make the phrase feel completely natural.
